Sunderland is ‘untroubled’ by the collapse of negotiations with Dan Neil.

Neil and his representatives have engaged in talks with senior Sunderland officials about a possible new long-term contract at the Stadium of Light.Sunderland saw a vision of a future without Dan Neil on Saturday, and it wasn't appealing - Roker Report

Although Neil still has a little over two years remaining on his current contract, the Black Cats’ management is keen to secure the 22-year-old with a longer-term deal.

However, the discussions concluded without a successful agreement, as Neil reportedly prefers to wait and observe developments under a new head coach before committing to a long-term deal.

Sunderland has also had similarly unproductive talks with Jack Clarke, another player whose current contract is set to expire in the summer of 2026.Both Neil and Clarke have attracted external interest over the past year, with Neil being linked to several Premier League clubs following a successful season in the Championship.

The Wearsider started 42 of Sunderland’s 46 Championship matches and is considered a key part of the club’s future plans. This is why there is a strong desire to eliminate any uncertainty regarding his contractual status.

Though there’s some understandable disappointment regarding the stalled negotiations, Sunderland’s ownership group isn’t worried about Neil’s status.

While there have been discussions of a possible bid for the academy product this summer, with Leicester City showing long-term interest, there’s been no sign of a formal approach. Privately, sources express skepticism about whether such an offer will materialize.
