The Swans and Cardiff City fought for the championship until the last few games of the season last time out, but the Bluebirds defeated them for the second straight year.
Monet Legall acknowledges that they can do much better even if she is proud of what her side has accomplished with the attention they have received.
“We felt we could do better, but it was fantastic that we advanced to two semi-finals and placed second in the league.
“Last season was full of highs and lows, but there was a lot to learn about both as a team and as an individual.
“We know we can do better, but we learnt how to push ourselves as a team and be resilient with everything that was going on in the background.”
Swansea City’s new manager
Jamie Sherwood was appointed manager of Swansea over the summer, thus the team will have a new face in the dugout for the first time since 2011.
Sherwood has a strong resume and led Yeovil Town to the WSL in the past. Legall is overjoyed to have Sherwood join the group, despite never having met the Englishman before.
“Jamie has shown incredible qualities right away. We’re fortunate to have Jamie on board with his ideas and his strong-mindedness; even though I hadn’t met him before, I knew who he was and how excellent a coach he was.
“The way he wants to play football is ideal for us, and the team is progressing well as a result.”
Sherwood has added a number of new players since taking over, including Wales international Nia Jones and former Barry Town winger Aimee Deacon.
The Swans have been crowned the transfer window winners by many couch commentators, but Legall claims the new players are adjusting to their new surroundings rather nicely.
“Every new player has adapted really well. They seem to have been a member of this team for an eternity.
It can be intimidating for some people to join new teams, but the new females have gotten along so well that we do feel like a cohesive unit.
“This preseason, the vibe throughout the entire club has been incredible.”
From the outside looking in, Swansea has everything needed for a successful season, possibly even one in which they win a trophy.
Although the Swans have won numerous titles in the past, they have not won a trophy in the last two years.
Legall feels that these last two seasons have been very beneficial to the team, even though they still want to win championships.
“Winning trophies is great and all, but as a team, we need to take a season or two off to grow as a unit; otherwise, things get monotonous.
“Despite our two second-place finishes, it has been a learning experience for us because after a few disappointing seasons, we now know what we want.”
“We haven’t benefited from the management changes either, but our team’s ability to overcome that has been incredible.”
The team is now committed to applying what they have learnt in their quest to win the championship they last claimed in 2022.
We know what we can accomplish as a group, thus our expectations have grown steadily. We want to avoid repeating our two-year performance of coming in second. We wish to return to our former selves.
“We want people to fear playing with us on a weekly basis and to be afraid of us.” We wish to repeat our past successes since we are aware of them.
The Swans’ first game of the trip is against Cardiff Met at Cyncoed.
These two have traditionally set the pace, with the title frequently swinging between them. However, the Mets had an oddly disappointing season the previous year, placing sixth.
Legall believes the team will focus on their own game even if he is unsure of the type of challenge the Archers will present.
It’s difficult to say what we anticipate from them. It will be interesting to see how they set up for that first game, but we always put ourselves first.
“It will be interesting to see if Met have improved their style and game as a result of their disappointing performance last season.”
It seems like Swansea City’s season has fallen into place just right, and they may be prepared to break through their brief trophy drought.
Legall says she and her group are determined to prove they are the Swansea of old and that they are prepared to terrorise their rivals.
Our goal as a team is to demonstrate our abilities. Despite experiencing some highs and lows over the past two seasons, we aim to return to our winning ways and embody the essence of Swansea City.
