Georgia’s mascot, Uga XI, will not be traveling to Texas this week.

Georgia's UGA XI, Boom, makes his game day debut at season opener as Bulldogs honor Sonny Seiler

The Texas Longhorns are set to face the Georgia Bulldogs in a highly anticipated Top 5 SEC matchup this Saturday, which could have major implications for the rest of the season. However, the Bulldogs will be missing an important team member, as their mascot, Uga XI, won’t be traveling to Texas.

According to Charles Seiler, who owns the English bulldog known as “Boom,” the trip was deemed too long for the young dog. In an interview with Georgia athletics reporter Chip Towers from AJC, Seiler explained, “This dog hasn’t been on a plane or a bus yet.”

Seiler added that Boom, at just two years and two months old, is still very young, energetic, and unpredictable, making this game an unsuitable fit for him. He also dismissed speculation that Uga’s absence was related to the 2019 incident when Bevo, Texas’ mascot, charged Boom’s father, Que, before a Texas-Georgia game. Despite weighing 70 pounds, Boom isn’t ready for the flight to Austin, according to Seiler.

“The school gives me full discretion over the dog’s schedule,” Seiler noted, “and sometimes these trips just aren’t safe for us.” While Georgia will hope Uga XI’s absence won’t affect their performance, Texas will be counting on Bevo’s presence to help push them toward a crucial victory on Saturday.
