Cabezas qualified for the First Round of the NCAA Singles Championships

Sofia Cabezas of the Tennessee women’s tennis team lost her opening match at the NCAA Singles Championships on Monday afternoon. The senior lost 1-6, 4-6 to No. 67 Annabelle Xu of Virginia at Greenwood Tennis Center.

Cabezas, the 14th-ranked player in the country, could not overcome Xu’s excellent singles performance. Just two days after competing in the NCAA Team Championship Final Four, the Valencia, Venezuela native got off to a sluggish start in the first set and lost 1-6.

The senior gained momentum in the second set, winning four straight to take a 4-1 lead. Cabezas, playing for the fourth time in five days, was unable to maintain control as Xu battled back to win 6-4, securing the match.

Cabezas finishes the year as an ITA All-America with 12 outstanding singles triumphs, including three incredible victory against top-10 opponents.

Cabezas will compete in the NCAA Doubles Championships tomorrow alongside Elza Tomase. The couple will face Virginia’s Elaine Chervinsky and Melodie Collard, ranked eighth.
