NHL Rumors: Maple Leafs, Penguins, Sabres

In today’s NHL rumors rundown, Nick Robertson has informed the Toronto Maple Leafs that he still wishes to be traded. This situation leaves the future between Robertson and the Leafs uncertain. The Pittsburgh Penguins might be a potential suitor for Robertson, given their interest in him. Meanwhile, initial reports of Filip Zadina signing a PTO with the Buffalo Sabres appear to be premature, with several teams reportedly interested in securing him.

Nick Robertson’s Future with the Maple Leafs Remains Uncertain Ahead of Training Camp

NHL insider Chris Johnston informed TSN’s OverDrive that the situation with Nick Robertson and the Toronto Maple Leafs is at an impasse. Robertson, a restricted free agent, still desires a move from Toronto, but a resolution isn’t close. Leafs GM Brad Treliving has indicated that Robertson is needed, given his potential and the team’s current lack of depth at left wing.

There’s speculation on the Leafs’ next steps. They might invite Robertson to training camp with the promise of a roster spot if he performs well. Alternatively, they could bring in players on Professional Tryouts (PTOs) as a backup plan. If Robertson refuses to sign and the team opts not to trade him, he could face a holdout, risking missed time in camp, games, and financial loss.

Given limited market options, the Leafs might consider signing veterans on PTOs to assess their fit. Johnston observes that finding a clear solution is challenging, suggesting that the situation may continue to develop slowly.

Are Penguins Among the Teams Looking at Robertson?

Dan Kingerski of Pittsburgh Hockey Now recently explored the potential for the Pittsburgh Penguins to acquire Nick Robertson from the Toronto Maple Leafs. Kingerski described Robertson as a talented but unproven player, estimating his salary around $2 million. He highlighted that Penguins GM Kyle Dubas, who previously managed the Leafs, is a known admirer of Robertson. However, Kingerski suggested that if the Penguins were to offer Robertson a sheet, the Leafs would likely match it, making a trade a more feasible option.

The possibility of a trade hinges on whether Leafs GM Brad Treliving is open to moving Robertson. Despite Robertson’s expressed desire to be traded, it remains unclear if Treliving is prepared to part with him at this time.

Zadina Still Negotiating With Teams, Not Inked PTO With Sabres

Reports that Filip Zadina is signing a Professional Tryout (PTO) with the Buffalo Sabres are incorrect. Earlier, Pavel Barta of Deník Sport reported that Zadina would be joining the Sabres on a PTO, but this has been denied by Zadina’s agent, Darren Ferris. According to Ferris, the claim about Zadina signing a PTO with the Sabres is a “total fabrication.”

The former Sharks winger, Filip Zadina, is attracting interest from three teams, with ESPN’s Kevin Weekes noting that Zadina is evaluating multiple options.

Zadina, who will turn 25 in November, ended his contract with the Detroit Red Wings last summer and subsequently signed a one-year, $1.1 million deal with the San Jose Sharks. Despite scoring a career-high 13 goals, his overall performance didn’t see significant improvement, leading to his non-qualification. Now, Zadina is a free agent seeking a new contract.
