Swansea City may yet benefit from a promotion clause in the deal that saw Joel Piroe move to Leeds United last summer, it has emerged. It is believed the Swans would have banked around £3m had the Whites beaten Southampton in last Sunday’s Championship play-off final.

It seemed those hopes of an additional payment for Piroe had hit the buffers as United slipped to a 1-0 defeat at Wembley. Adam Armstrong’s first half strike sentenced the Whites to another year in the second tier of English football.

But a new BBC report says Piroe’s promotion clause runs for the duration of his four-year contract. United paid an initial £10.5m transfer fee to secure Piroe’s services last summer.

The Dutchman endured an inconsistent 2023/24 season, hitting 14 goals in 49 appearances across all competitions. Only five of those strikes came in the second half of the campaign as boss Daniel Farke mainly preferred Patrick Bamford in attack.

With Bamford sidelined by injury for their play-off tilt, Piroe was tasked with leading the line. He delivered arguably his best performance in a United shirt in the second leg of their semi-final win over Norwich City. Piroe grabbed the Whites’ second goal and was a thorn in the Canaries side throughout.

But the 24-year-old struggled to make an impact against the Saints. The service into Piroe left a lot to be desired at times but the forward put in a disappointing showing on the big stage. It will be interesting to see if Farke looks to strengthen his forward line this summer following the club’s agonising promotion near-miss.
