Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney has continued to make headlines this offseason due to his controversial stance on the NCAA transfer portal. The Tigers are the only Power 4 program not to sign a player from the portal, which could have a negative impact on the program’s success next season.

ESPN’s Paul Finebaum believes Finebaum’s failure to evolve over the years has created a major problem for the Tigers. He also noted that Swinney’s tenure at Clemson could be coming to a close if he fails to alter his approach to building a program.

“It is catching up to him as we speak,” Finebaum said. “People that graduated from Clemson, people that are Clemson fans — they don’t think Dabo Swinney is going to be there a long time. When I say a long time, I mean three to five years. I think his time is nearly up.

“He is falling so far behind,” Finebaum continued. “That doesn’t mean they can’t have a good program. That is if you call 9-3 or 8-4 or maybe an occasional 10-2 a good program. But that’s not the same school that went to six consecutive CFPs a few years ago and played for four national championships. I think that part of it is over.”

Under Swinney, Clemson won 10 or more games for 12 consecutive seasons, but the streak ended last season as the Tigers failed to compete for the ACC Championship. Swinney has also lost more games over the past three seasons than he did the six seasons prior (2015-20).

Finebaum also questioned Swinney’s ability to catch the elite programs in college football.

“If you missed a minute, you fell behind,” Finebaum said. “He missed three years. He is way behind, and he’s not catching up.”
