Beat writer’s insight provides possible injury return hope for Commanders CB Marshon Lattimore

Marshon Lattimore

Marshon Lattimore’s injury is becoming a mild concern for Washington Commanders fans.

The veteran cornerback hasn’t been seen on the field in a competitive setting since his trade from the New Orleans Saints before the deadline. Head coach Dan Quinn thought things were trending up in terms of participation sooner rather than later. One beat writer provided some useful insight regarding Lattimore’s recovery following Thursday’s practice.

Lattimore was listed as a DNP (did not practice) for the second straight day heading into their Week 12 game against the Dallas Cowboys. However, he did work on the side field with the Commanders’ strength and conditioning coaches.

John Keim of ESPN went a little deeper, highlighting the nature of his exercises and the overall tempo as Lattimore looks to prove his fitness to the staff.

This is a far cry from what’s needed to lock horns with Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, but it represents a step in the right direction nonetheless. It’s a glimmer of hope that the four-time Pro Bowler can get involved soon, although it would be shocking to see him suit up at Northwest Stadium this weekend when one factors everything into the equation.

Commanders are rightfully taking their time with Marshon Lattimore

Much will depend on how Lattimore comes through his recent drills. If he can feature in Friday’s practice – which does seem highly unlikely – there’s a slim chance he’ll be involved. But the Commanders knew this wasn’t going to be an immediate asset and are taking every possible precaution to ensure he’s ready to make a lasting contribution at the business end of the campaign.

Nobody within the building will care too much about what fans are saying about the trade on social media. They considered everything before making the move, including Lattimore’s injury. If those in power feel like a little more time is needed, they’ll keep the former Ohio State standout out of action until they’re sure.

Keim’s report indicates Lattimore’s trajectory is encouraging. Ramping things up gradually is the preferred and correct approach. This weekend’s game will probably come too soon for the shutdown presence, but it shouldn’t be too much longer before he gets the all-clear.

That might be after the bye week when push comes to shove. The Commanders have an extended rest period in Week 14 after a grueling campaign so far. Allowing Lattimore this extra time to recuperate should guarantee he’s ready to hit the ground running when the team gets back down to business.

It’ll be interesting to see how things play out. Fans are extremely impatient in the instant gratification world we live in, especially in this instance given they wanted an immediate return on Washington’s investment.

The Commanders have smart people running the football operation at long last. More importantly, they’re always looking to do right by the players above all else.

Just be patient. When Lattimore’s ready, he’s going to be a significant asset to Washington’s improving defense. The sooner it happens, the better the Commanders’ chances will be.
