Southampton forward Sam Archer expressed his relief and excitement after scoring his first league goal for the club, stating that he always believed the moment would come.
Archer, who joined Southampton during the summer transfer window, had been knocking on the door for several matches without finding the back of the net. Despite his consistent hard work and impressive performances, the elusive first goal had escaped him – until now.
In the Saints’ recent clash against Sheffield United, Archer broke his duck, netting a crucial goal in a 2-1 victory that ended the team’s run of three consecutive league defeats.
Reflecting on the breakthrough moment, Archer spoke with calm confidence. “I knew it would come eventually,” the 22-year-old striker said in a post-match interview. “I’ve been working hard in training, and the coaching staff and my teammates have been really supportive. It was just about staying patient and trusting the process.”
The goal, which came in the 63rd minute, was a product of Archer’s relentless pressing and composure inside the box. After a quick interchange of passes with midfielder James Ward-Prowse, Archer calmly slotted the ball past the Sheffield goalkeeper, sending St. Mary’s Stadium into a frenzy.
Archer described the feeling as “unbelievable” and credited the team for sticking together during what has been a challenging period for the club. “The fans have been amazing, even when things weren’t going our way. I’m just glad I could repay their faith with that goal,” he said.
Southampton manager Russell Martin was full of praise for Archer’s perseverance. “Sam’s been outstanding for us since he arrived. He’s contributed in so many ways, even without scoring, and now that he’s off the mark, I think we’ll see him grow even more. He’s got the talent and the right mentality to be a top player for this club.”
Archer’s goal could prove to be a turning point, both for him personally and for the team, as they look to climb up the Championship table and push for promotion back to the Premier League. “Now that I’ve got my first goal, I just want to keep going, help the team, and hopefully score many more,” Archer added with a smile.
With the monkey off his back, all eyes will be on Archer as he aims to build on this momentum and establish himself as a key figure in Southampton’s promotion bid.
