Baah, Ogbonna and Ince pushing for a league start against Sunderland

Although Kwadwo Baah’s disallowed goal at the Etihad on Tuesday night garnered all of the attention from the national media, his performance against Manchester City was much more complex than just a single shoulder barge.

Though any fans who saw the forward during preseason friendly may have spotted the name then, the 21-year-old’s remarkable play has only grown since the season began.

Prior to this season, Baah had never kicked a ball for Watford in a league match. He had previously played on loan for Burton Albion and Fortuna Dusseldorf after joining from Rochdale in 2021.

With seven games under his belt for the Hornets, he put the seasoned England international John Stones to the test on Tuesday.

While Baah hasn’t yet received a start in the Championship, Watford supporters aren’t the only ones observing the difference he’s making.

Head coach Tom Cleverley stated of the player, “He’s definitely eye-catching and has explosive qualities the like of which I’ve never seen.”

“He has no trouble defeating a player one on one.

“We witnessed his power during the disallowed goal on Tuesday night, and he’s a dynamic player.

“He has a great attitude this season, is aware of his areas for improvement, and is willing to work hard and pay attention.”

That he has observed the advantages of that on the field makes me very happy.Defensor Angelo Ogbonna, on the other hand, has a lot more experience. His Carabao Cup debut on Tuesday helped him get closer to the 500-senior career appearance mark.

Cleverley said, “Angelo is what we need right now—an Italian-style defender who values the art of defensive actions.”

He manages the squad, and while he has a lot of expertise, what we need from him is a little bit different, particularly when it comes to possession.

“Because elite players do it, he’s picking it up very fast.”

Tuesday night’s goalie Jonathan Bond, who had to overcome the disappointment of giving up a goal so early, produced a number of excellent stops behind Ogbonna.

“Although I didn’t think it was a complete assault from City, you are going to concede chances there because they’re that good,” the Watford manager stated. “He was the last line of defense.”

“Bondy is dependable, composed, and I have no concerns whatsoever about him taking over and performing admirably.”

Tom Ince is another member of the team who hasn’t started a league game yet, but after scoring three goals in the Carabao Cup, surely he’s calling the shots?

“Yes, he is,” Cleverley replied.

“He puts in a shift and is a very fit and intelligent player.”

“You can see he’s giving it his all during his team’s recovery runs, and his left foot is of excellent quality.”

“He is an individual who is striving for a beginning.”
