Jake Waterman, an All-Australian forward, has expressed immense relief after re-signing with West Coast until the end of 2029, despite interest from clubs like Geelong and Melbourne.

Waterman, who was already contracted until the end of the 2025 season after signing a two-year deal in 2023, has secured a new contract reportedly worth close to $1 million per season. This deal rewards his breakout 2024 season, during which he scored 53 goals in 20 games, solidifying his reputation as one of the league’s top forwards.

His significance to the West Coast Eagles has only increased following Jack Darling’s recent trade to North Melbourne, making Waterman’s commitment even more vital for the team’s future.

Reflecting on his decision, Waterman stated, “It’s an honour to sign a long-term contract at a great club like West Coast. It’s a massive weight off my shoulders. There’s been a bit of speculation for a couple of months now, and it’s been a long time coming, so I’m happy to get it done.”

He acknowledged the effort from both his management and the club, saying, “I know there’s a process with these things, and between my management and the football club, they were working away to get that done as soon as they could. Now that it’s finally done, it’s a reality, and I’m just happy that I’m locked away here for the next five years.”

With Waterman committed for the long term, West Coast fans can look forward to his continued impact on the team’s resurgence.

Jake Waterman’s career faced a critical moment in 2023 when he was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, a chronic inflammatory bowel disease. Despite the setback, Waterman returned to pre-season training in peak condition and went on to deliver his best season to date in 2024.

Now, Waterman is determined to help rebuild West Coast and return the club to its former glory, reminiscent of the successful era when his father, Chris Waterman, was in his prime during the 1990s. Reflecting on his commitment to the Eagles, Waterman said, “I’ve grown up walking the halls of family homes with Eagles colours plastered all over the wall. Although there was speculation earlier in the year, I had my heart set on staying here.”

Looking ahead to 2025, Waterman will form a key partnership with Oscar Allen in the forward line, aiming to lead West Coast’s resurgence. Behind them, developing tall forwards Jack Williams and Archer Reid represent the next generation of spearheads eager to cement their place in the side.

Waterman’s perseverance through health challenges and his determination to stay loyal to the Eagles have made him a symbol of resilience as West Coast embarks on its rebuilding phase.
