Sheffield Wednesday has had an active summer transfer window, and with the deadline approaching, the club still has business to complete. Manager Danny Rohl is looking to add depth to the squad while also needing to offload fringe players. The final deadline for deals is 11pm on August 30th.
Experienced striker Michael Smith, linked with a move away, has caught the eye of ambitious League One side Wrexham. Despite scoring in Sheffield Wednesday’s opening-day win over Plymouth Argyle and featuring in their defeat to Sunderland, Smith might be available for the right price.
Currently, Wrexham and Sheffield Wednesday are no closer to reaching an agreement. Although there has been contact between the two clubs, earlier talks did not result in a deal, and negotiations are still some distance from completion.
It’s important to note that once returning favorite Ike Ugbo is fully fit and available, Smith may find himself pushed further down the pecking order. He will face additional competition for starting spots from Jamal Lowe and Charlie McNeill.
Bailey Cadamarteri, like Smith, is in a comparable position in the Sheffield Wednesday pecking order and has been linked with a loan move as the club aims to retain and develop him as a future star.
Although no deal has been finalized with Wrexham or any other club yet, a move could be highly beneficial for Smith. Given the increasing competition for places in Rohl’s squad, a striker of Smith’s goalscoring ability deserves consistent playing time, which a transfer could provide.
Wrexham’s pursuit
Wrexham is actively seeking additional striking options to complement their main forward, Paul Mullin. With two strikers typically deployed and younger fringe players in need of loan opportunities, the team is looking to strengthen their attack.
Sheffield Wednesday’s striker Smith, known for his impressive League One record, could be a great fit. Pairing him with Mullin would give Wrexham two proven goalscorers with a track record of promotion.
However, negotiations for Smith are still ongoing. While Sheffield Wednesday is open to the possibility of a sale, any deal would need to meet their conditions.
