Wrexham fans likely hoped for a short stint in the National League, but it became a familiar fixture for the club. After several near-misses with promotion, Wrexham finally secured a return to the Football League in 2023. Now, with back-to-back promotions, they’ve advanced to League One.

This remarkable ascent has provided Wrexham supporters with a success that seemed unattainable just five years ago. Their appreciation for this turnaround is especially strong after enduring years in non-league football.

Former Wrexham striker set for Real Madrid

In 2008, Wrexham appointed Dean Saunders as the new manager, taking over from Brian Little at the STōK Cae Ras. Saunders led the team to a fourth-place finish in 2011, although their season ended with a playoff semi-final loss to Luton Town.

Striker Andy Mangan, who joined Wrexham from Forest Green Rovers in January 2009, was a key player. He scored seven goals in 23 appearances to finish the 2009-10 season and followed that with an impressive 16 goals in the 2010-11 season.

After Wrexham’s unsuccessful bid for promotion, Mangan moved to Fleetwood Town and later played for Shrewsbury Town, Tranmere Rovers, and Accrington Stanley before retiring in 2018.

Transitioning into coaching, Mangan worked alongside fellow Liverpudlian Joey Barton at Fleetwood Town and Bristol Rovers. Now with Stockport County, Mangan’s coaching reputation is on the rise, and he is set for an extraordinary move to Real Madrid.

According to Alan Nixon from The Sun, Mangan is set to join Carlo Ancelotti’s coaching team in Madrid. It appears that Mangan and Ancelotti’s son Davide completed a coaching course together, which has led to this impressive opportunity.

Wrexham fans will remember Mangan from his time playing alongside Mark Creighton, Dean Keates, and Frank Sinclair. Now, at 37, he will be tasked with coaching high-profile players like Vinicius Junior, Jude Bellingham, and Kylian Mbappe.

This is a surprising and significant development for Mangan, which would have been hard to imagine during his time with Wrexham. There’s even a possibility that if Wrexham continues to secure high-profile pre-season matches in the U.S., we might see Mangan coaching Real Madrid against Phil Parkinson’s Wrexham in the future.
