Rob McElhenney, a co-owner of Wrexham, praised manager Phil Parkinson on social media. Ryan Reynolds and McElhenney own the Welsh team together. Following their victory over Shrewsbury to take the lead in League One, McElhenney posted on X.
With 13 points from their first five games of the new season, the Red Dragons have had an incredible start. They kept up their strong play on Saturday when they defeated their cross-border rivals, with goals from Ollie Palmer, Elliot Lee, and Jack Marriott doing the heavy lifting.
After being appointed by Reynolds and McElhenney in 2021, Parkinson took Wrexham from the bottom of non-league to the third division in a matter of only a few seasons. His influence was illustrated by a post on X that explained how Wrexham had amassed more points than any other team in the top five English football divisions since the 2022–2023 season began.
McElhenney was motivated by this to quote-tweet the post along with a personal statement, stating: “And it’s all because of this man.” Prior to saying, “In Phil we trust,” Wrexham expressed their enduring devotion to the one who has guided them to League One.
After taking over in July 2021, Parkinson—who had previously managed teams like Bradford City, Charlton, Bolton, and Sunderland—did not immediately get his way. Wrexham’s unanticipated dip in the standings occurred during his first season when they were defeated by Grimsby Town in the National League play-off semifinals.
That infuriated the players as much as the manager, and Wrexham went on to excel the next season under Parkinson’s direction, setting a new high of 111 points. They won back-to-back promotions following their arrival in League Two, securing their first-ever return to the third division since 2005.
And just like a duck to water, they have adapted to their new environment. They beat Wycombe Wanderers 3-2 at home to start the season, then drew 0-0 against Bolton away from home. Since then, though, they’ve won three straight, defeating Shrewsbury, Peterborough, and Reading without giving up a goal.
In an earlier post on X earlier this year, McElhenney expressed his adoration for Parkinson on social media, saying, “If we could bottle up and sell what Phil says to these players at halftime we’d be billionaires.” This summer, the co-owner of Wrexham also stated to BBC Sport, “It’s been difficult every year, but it’s only going to get harder, harder, harder.”
The best we can do is make investments in our manager Phil, the town’s and the team’s infrastructure, and the development of our youth academy. Give Phil access to any player he desires, hopefully, and then try it out.
