Some difficult departures were confirmed, with Rob McElhenney particularly saddened by the exit of Luke Young, who left at the end of his contract. Ben Tozer and Aaron Hayden also moved on, marking the end of an era for players who played key roles in Wrexham’s rise.
Over the summer, Wrexham secured eight new signings, later adding a free agent, Josh Adam, after the transfer window closed.
Welsh international on road to recovery after Wrexham links
Arthur Okonkwo, Callum Burton, Lewis Brunt, Dan Scarr, Sebastian Revan, George Dobson, Ollie Rathbone, and Modou Faal were all summer signings for Wrexham, followed by Adam’s later arrival.
While some transfer targets materialized, others either moved elsewhere or remain unattached. Reports from June indicated that Wrexham had shown interest in signing midfielder Joe Morrell on a free transfer.
Morrell suffered an injury in January, causing him to miss the rest of the season as Portsmouth secured promotion to the Championship. After leaving Pompey at the end of the season, a free transfer to Wrexham was rumored to be on the cards.
However, injuries have continued to hinder Morrell, which is why he remains a free agent in October. Although Wrexham hasn’t made a concrete move for Morrell yet, the midfielder is steadily working his way back to fitness.
Pompey boss John Mousinho revealed that Morrell has returned to light training and praised his impact last season. Mousinho expressed his admiration for Morrell, saying, “Joe’s back out on the grass now. He has just started jogging, so is still a few weeks out.”
He acknowledged the lengthy recovery process but commended Morrell’s positive attitude, adding, “I think very highly of Joe as a player and hope he gets back quickly.”
Would Wrexham still want Joe Morrell?
Morrell’s nearing return to action will likely catch the attention of several clubs.
A seasoned midfielder with experience in both the Championship and League One, Morrell can be a significant asset when fully fit.
Wrexham’s interest, however, may have cooled, especially after signing three midfielders – Dobson, Rathbone, and Adam – in recent months.
Complicating matters, Wrexham is currently dealing with a major injury blow as midfielder George Evans faces time on the sidelines.
While Morrell could bring valuable experience to replace Evans, he’s still some distance from being match-ready. By the time Morrell is fit, Evans will be closer to returning, making it likely that Wrexham will stick with their current midfield options instead of pursuing Morrell.
