Carlton has told Kennedy, who is under contract through 2025, that if a serious team wants to acquire him this off-season, the team is willing to help.
Kennedy believes he can play an inner midfield role for the navy blue team, but the former Giant is far down the ladder by Carlton’s engine room team and frequently plays half-forward instead.
Kennedy faced some hardships as his 2024 campaign came to a close. Days before Carlton’s elimination final match against Brisbane, the midfielder was hospitalised with a sickness and had to make a last-minute trip to Queensland when his baby was born. It was a frustrating outing for the onballer as he was substituted out of the season-ending loss before halftime.
Both sides have held “honest” talks as a result of Kennedy’s circumstances, and Kennedy has been given permission to explore elsewhere before the October trading season.
The Blues ball winner is still willing to continue at Princes Park, but if he does sign with a third AFL club, Kennedy will want to stay in Victoria.
Kennedy’s manager Dave Trotter stated on Gettable that while Kennedy will leave his options open, he looks most likely to continue with the Blues.
Trotter remarked, “That was a really honest chat.”
“Several teams I’ve spoken to seem to have assumed it was because he was substituted off (against the Lions).” Matt had a very eventful week; he spent the first 48 hours of the week in the hospital due to illness and then again for the birth of his first kid. Then he took off and was replaced.
However, we’ve had open discussions with Matt and the team all year long. In his own eyes, he is an inside mid. He is extremely content at Carlton and will probably continue there, but the club had an open discussion and said, “If you had the chance to play for a Victoria-based team and you felt that was what you wanted to do, then go for it.”
“Matt hasn’t expressed a desire to leave or anything similar. We would have an open discussion with the club if something came up, and they would be receptive.”
Lewis Young, a crucial defender, and unsigned small forward Matt Owies are rumoured to have been warned by the club they can look elsewhere during this trade season.
Nick Haynes, Kennedy’s former teammate and a free agent, is expected to be courted by Carlton when the signing window that opens next month. Daniel Houston, a defensive player from Port Adelaide, is another player connected to the Blues.
