The verdict on Nottingham Forest’s points deduction appeal has been issued, along with addressing a financial matter totaling £47.5 million.

Nuno Espirito Santo looks on

Football finance expert Kieran Maguire suggests that it would be a favorable outcome for Nottingham Forest if they manage to reclaim two points as a result of their appeal to the Premier League.

Following a breach of the top-flight’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) and the subsequent deduction of four points from their record, Forest found themselves closer to the relegation zone. To address this, they promptly appealed the decision.

A hearing occurred at the end of April, and the awaited verdict is imminent. Maguire weighs in on the situation, emphasizing the wisdom of Forest in enlisting the services of lawyer Nick De Marco.

“If there’s anyone who can secure a last-minute result for Nottingham Forest, it’s Nick De Marco,” he stated to Football Insider. “He is among the best, if not the best sports lawyers in the country.”

Maguire suggests that Forest would view reclaiming one or two points from their appeal as a positive outcome. However, achieving this would require the full persuasive abilities of Forest’s legal team, especially considering that the crux of the issue revolves around Brennan Johnson’s transfer fee.

Johnson departed the City Ground for Tottenham Hotspur in a £47.5 million deal in September 2023, three months after the deadline for his transfer fee to be included in the previous year’s financial records. As an academy graduate, this transfer fee represented pure profit for the club.

Maguire concludes, “At face value, it appears to be a straightforward case.”

Following their victory against Sheffield United on Saturday, Forest now sit three points clear of the relegation zone, with Luton Town currently occupying the final relegation spot. Thus, Maguire’s notion of a “good result” would extend Forest’s lead to five points, with a maximum of six points still available to earn in the ongoing campaign.
