Derek Ferguson finds it hard to understand why the Rangers have not moved forward with a serious attempt to recruit Motherwell’s Lennon Miller.
The teenager, in the opinion of the former Ibrox midfielder, is among the top young possibilities in Scottish football “without a doubt,” making him the kind of player the Light Blues should be pursuing.
Considering that Miller, 17, has been on the club’s radar for more than a year, he believes that the team has been “guilty” of ignoring the best talent available domestically and is worried about why it is taking so long for there to be any real progress in this quest.
The Ibrox News-exclusive BBC Sport commentator admitted, “There are moments when I scratch my head.” I have known for the past year or so that this boy has been on the radar.
“So why would you leave it for so long, considering the viewpoint of the Rangers? You would be corresponding with Motherwell in an attempt to resolve a package issue.
“I believe we have been guilty of not signing the best young players in Scotland to play for your club. You want that.”
“However, Lennon Miller is without a doubt one of the best young prospects in Scottish football, so I am not sure why Rangers have not tried to tie that deal up already.”
Might Rangers sign the sensation from Fir Park?
The fact that Ibrox has had three different managers in the last three seasons may contribute to the issue, as the current campaign has demonstrated the erratic nature of transfer plans—both Sam Lammers and Jose Cifuentes, who were signed by Michael Beale but left shortly after under Philippe Clement.
It is possible that, like some others, the Ibrox hierarchy feels Miller would be better off continuing to develop at Motherwell and that it would be premature for him to join the club. This belief is entirely reasonable as long as Miller stays put.
In order to avoid missing out on the best Scottish talent, Rangers should at the very least get in touch with Stuart Kettlewell’s representatives regarding an agreement that would enable him to stay at Fir Park for the foreseeable future.
