Former Sheffield Wednesday player Saido Berahino held a Q&A session where he discussed the club’s tendency to release players and sign new free agents, a pattern that has persisted over several summer transfer windows. He shared his thoughts on the matter, suggesting that this trend might continue given the limited resources available for player recruitment under Danny Rohl. Berahino was also asked about his own release from the club in 2022, expressing his surprise at the decision. Saido Berahino, aged 30, joined Sheffield Wednesday for the 2021/22 season under the management of former West Brom boss Darren Moore, following a stint in Belgium. Throughout his time with the club, Berahino made 36 appearances, contributing nine goals and four assists, proving himself as a valuable addition to the team.

However, despite his contributions, Sheffield Wednesday decided to release the former West Brom and Stoke City player at the end of the season, following their failure to secure promotion to the Championship.

When asked about his reaction to the decision, Berahino expressed his surprise, stating, “Absolutely!!!!”

Currently, Berahino is playing for Cypriot side AEL Limassol, but his contract is set to expire in the summer.

Sheffield Wednesday’s decision to release Saido Berahino prompts speculation about whether they acted too hastily. Berahino himself acknowledged the surprise of adapting to the physicality of League One, indicating a willingness to address this aspect of his game. Despite this adjustment period, his goal-scoring record for Sheffield Wednesday was notable, particularly considering the demanding nature of League One. With more time, Berahino could have potentially played a significant role for the Owls in the subsequent season, especially under the management of Danny Rohl, potentially revitalizing his career.

However, the opportunity for Berahino to further develop with Sheffield Wednesday was cut short, leaving him at a crossroads with his contract set to expire in the summer. A return to English football could present an intriguing prospect, with clubs likely to be intrigued by the chance to harness his potential.
