High-flying Wrexham had too much quality for a below-par and “overawed” Grimsby Town, David Artell has said.
In the first half of their encounter on Saturday at Blundell Park, a team trying to make their second straight promotion blew the Mariners out of the park. Town’s six-game unbeaten streak notwithstanding, facing such a formidable squad was always going to provide a difficult task, but Artell’s team failed to impress from the start.
Town was behind after five minutes and trailed 3-0 at the break. Though Justin Obikwu’s shot went narrowly over the bar and Arthur Gnahoua’s late strike gave some hope, Artell acknowledged that his squad had too much work ahead of them.

After losing to Town, their six-game winning streak came to an end, yet they still have a six-point lead over the bottom two. Even though Sutton United has won its past two games, work still needs to be done in the upcoming matches.
Artell’s team did not perform to the same level against Wrexham as they had in previous games. They must get back to that form since they have some tough games coming up.
“A team like Wrexham can expose one or two little mistakes and turn them into something big like goals, and that was unfortunately what happened for us,” Artell continued. We performed marginally worse than what we had expected of ourselves during the previous six games, in my opinion, and that’s why we got punished.
The most important thing, in my opinion, is to make sure we uphold our standards since it is something we can control. We need to be careful to ensure that one loss doesn’t spiral into two or three after our current six-match winning streak. We’ve got an excellent chance of staying up if we can go on another six-match winning streak.
